Holocaust Studies MA Stream at UVic
We are pleased to announce that the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies at the University of Victoria is now accepting applications to our interdisciplinary MA stream in Holocaust Studies.
Interlinking scholarship with community-based field research—in effect drawing on the strengths of both academic research and experiential learning—our graduate stream provides individual learners with key competencies designed to prepare them for a career in education, public history, museum and/or archival work, human rights education, journalism, public advocacy, and law. Our program also provides students with a solid interdisciplinary foundation for further PhD studies in Holocaust Studies, Genocide Studies, or Human Rights and Equity Studies.
Students benefit from seminar-sized classes, a newly-designed set of foundation courses, and a dual focus on academic and professionalization skills in our disciplines.
Funding packages include graduate awards, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships. Throughout their MA program, students will also have opportunities to work with our scholars of international renown on projects in genocide studies and Holocaust memorialization. Our Holocaust Studies Stream offers a thesis and a non-thesis option and includes a required practicum/co-op placement in Canada and abroad, as well as academic exchange opportunities in Berlin and possibly in Budapest.
Language Requirements:
Students are required to demonstrate their reading competency in one research-appropriate language (other than English) prior to entering the program. Depending on the nature of the proposed thesis or research project, students may be expected to reach higher proficiency levels in a research-appropriate language (other than English).

Applicants who have appropriate community-based experience in the field of Holocaust Studies may be considered for admission without meeting the full requirements.
