Call for Nominations: Hermann Boeschenstein Medal for Exceptional Contributions to German Studies in Canada

German Studies Canada / Études Allemandes Canada (GSC/ÉAC) invites nominations for the Hermann Boeschenstein Medal for Exceptional Contributions to German Studies in Canada. While the call is issued every other year, the medal is awarded occasionally. The medal is inscribed “Hermann Boeschenstein (1900-1982): Teacher, Scholar, Humanitarian.” It is awarded to a person at a Canadian university who has made exceptional contributions to the advancement of research and teaching in the field of German language, literature, culture, and media in Canada; and who has served the profession, including the GSC/ÉAC (or the Canadian Association of University Teachers of German [CAUTG] as the organization preceding it), in exemplary manner. Please submit nominations to be considered in the current nomination round to the Chair of the Boeschenstein Medal Selection Committee, Professor Carrie Smith (carrie.smith@ualberta.ca) by 20 February 2026. Nominations must be accompanied by supporting documentation as outlined below. The Selection Committee will consider all nominations and report its decision to the GSC/ÉAC Board. The awardee will be announced at the biennial GSC/ÉAC conference in Edmonton in May 2026.
