The Canadian Association of University Teachers of German (CAUTG), or L’Association des Professeurs d’Allemand des Universités Canadienne (APAUC), was founded in 1961 by faculty members from twelve Canadian universities. CAUTG/APAUC changed its name to German Studies Canada (GSC), or Études Allemandes Canada (EAC), in . It is a resource and gathering point for faculty and graduate students in interdisciplinary fields related to German studies of language, literature, film, and culture.

GSC/EAC is a member of the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences and holds its conference at the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, a gathering held since its first incarnation in 1931 in Ottawa, on a bi-annual basis.

GSC/EAC initiatives include

  • since 1965 publishing Seminar: A Journal of Germanic Studies, a leading journal of scholarly work in the broad area of German studies.
  • the Canadian Summer School in Germany (CSSG), inaugurated in 1973, which brings Canadian students to Germany to learn and improve their German
  • annually surveying enrolments in German programs across Canada
  • the Thesis Award, recognizing outstanding work by master’s and doctoral students in German studies, broadly conceived
  • the Innovate German Award, which brings attention to unique approaches to teaching in German studies
