Job Posting: Instructor I in German Studies at the U of Manitoba

The Department of German and Slavic Studies in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Manitoba invites applications for a full-time three-year term position at the rank of Instructor I in German Studies. It is anticipated that a continuing (permanent) instructor position will be advertised during or at the end of the duration of the term position. The successful candidate must have a PhD in German Studies, or be very near completion, a specialization in literary and cultural studies (a strong interdisciplinary expertise in German Cultural Studies in the twentieth or twenty-first century would be desirable) and experience in successful German language and culture/literature teaching. Expertise in teaching film, multicultural theory, courses with indigenous content, popular culture, post-colonialism/ German colonial history, minority studies, intercultural theory, or human rights studies will be considered an asset. Another asset would be experience or interest in developing on-line / distance courses.

The successful candidate is expected to teach courses in German language as well as literature, and culture courses conducted in German and English from first-year to the Master’s level, and to engage in honours student and M.A. student advising. Native or near-native fluency in the German and in the English language is essential. The duties include up to 24 credit hours a year of teaching and service to the Department, Faculty, University, and the community. All German program members are expected to work closely in a team and to be committed to further developing a vibrant German program, to actively engage in community outreach with Manitoba’s strong German-Canadian community, as well as to promote and support study-abroad courses and programs.

The starting salary will reflect the qualifications and experience of the chosen candidate. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2019.
