Call for Papers: From Reformation to Globalization

The year 2017 will bring celebrations of the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s supposed posting of his 95 Theses as a signal event of the Protestant Reformation, as well as celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Dominion of Canada. This dual anniversary will be celebrated with an exhibition of Reformation library treasures and an academic conference at Saint Paul University and the University of Ottawa, jointly organized with the University of Erfurt, and with support from the National Library and Archives of Canada, the Gotha Research Library, and the Embassy of Germany in Canada.

in Canada, Germany, and the World

The exhibition “The Reformation – Translation and Transmission: Library Treasures from Germany and Canada” will provide a unique illustration of the worldwide impact of the Reformation by bringing together original editions and translations of Martin Luther’s works and other key Reformation texts from the Gotha Research Library, Saint Paul University and the National Library and Archives of Canada.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the academic symposium “From Reformation to Globalization in Canada, Germany, and the World” will explore the myriad and seminal forms of impact that the Reformation has had and continues to have on many aspects of religion, politics, society and culture in Canada, Germany, and in the wider world. Academic experts from many disciplines and community activists will explore these connections in panels and roundtables. The organizers also envision a graduate student workshop or seminar. The themes addressed at the conference could include but are not limited to the following:

• Spreading the word: the Reformation and the impact of new media on society from print to the internet
• The impact of the Reformation on philosophy and ideas, on worldviews (especially Western Modernity and secularization), on politics, on economics, on history, …
• Reformation and Migration
• Reformation and Justification: The Project “Not for Sale”, Resistance to Social and Ecological Injustice
• Religious Tolerance and Diversity in the past (Treaty of Westphalia, Augsburg) and current times
• Religion and Violence
• Reformation and Literature and the Arts
• Reformation and Language (Bible translations and the standardization of language)
• Dialogue: between Protestants and Catholics, inter-religious dialogue, religious-secular dialogue

The organizing committee invites proposals for papers (maximum 20 minutes) on these and other topics related to the conference theme, in English or French, as well as for academic posters. Graduate student participation is specifically encouraged. Proposals of not more than 300 words and a CV should be sent by email to Joerg Esleben at jesleben@uottawa.ca by the submission deadline of 1 December 2016.

De la Réforme à la mondialisation:
le Canada, l’Allemagne et le monde

2017 marquera le 500e anniversaire du début de la Réforme protestante – Luther placardant ses 95 thèses – et le 150e anniversaire de la fondation du Canada. Ce double anniversaire sera célébré par une exposition de livres rares de la Réforme et par une conférence universitaire qui se tiendra à l’Université Saint-Paul d’Ottawa et à l’Université d’Ottawa, conjointement avec l’Université d’Erfurt, et avec l’appui de Bibliothèque et Archives Canada, de la bibliothèque de recherche Gotha et de l’ambassade d’Allemagne à Ottawa.

L’exposition « La Réforme – traduction et transmission: trésors de bibliothèques de l’Allemagne et du Canada » permettra d’une manière unique d’illustrer l’impact universel de la Réforme. Elle regroupera des éditions originales et des traductions d’oeuvres de Martin Luther ainsi que d’autres textes réformateurs clés provenant de la Bibliothèque de recherché Gotha, de l’Université Saint-Paul et de Bibliothèque et Archives Canada.

Conjointement à cette exposition, la conférence universitaire « De la Réforme à la mondialisation au Canada, en Allemagne et dans le monde » explorera les formes multiples et fécondes de l’impact qu’a eu et continue d’avoir la Réforme sur plusieurs aspects de la religion, de la politique, de la société et de la culture au Canada, en Allemagne et partout dans le monde. Des spécialistes de plusieurs disciplines et des personnes engagées dans la communauté exploreront ces liens lors de panels et de tables-rondes. Un atelier/séminaire pour étudiants et étudiantes aux études supérieures est également prévu. Voici une liste non exhaustive des thèmes qui seront abordés:
• Propager la parole: la Réforme et l’impact social des nouveaux medias, de l’imprimerie à l’internet
• L’impact de la Réforme sur la philosophie et les idées, les visions du monde (en particulier la question de la modernité occidentale et de la sécularisation), la politique, l’économie, l’histoire…
• Réforme et mouvements migratoires
• Réforme et justification: le projet « Not for Sale », la résistance à l’injustice sociale et écologique
• La tolérance religieuse et la diversité, autant dans le passé (Traité de Westphalie, Augsbourg) qu’aujourd’hui
• Religion et violence
• La Réforme, les arts et la literature
• Réforme et langues (traductions de la Bible et homogénéisation de la langue)
• Dialogue Protestants-Catholiques, dialogue interreligieux, dialogue entre le religieux et la sécularité

Le comité organisateur invite à soumettre une proposition de communication en français ou en anglais (d’un maximum de 20 min.) sur ces sujets ou sur d’autres en lien avec le thème de la conférence. Les posters sont également bienvenus. La participation des étudiants et étudiantes aux études supérieures est particulièrement encouragée.
